10 Essential Oils that Help Repel Bugs

Essential Oils That Help Repel Bugs Naturally 🌿

Spending time outdoors is one of my favorite parts of warmer weather, whether we’re camping, relaxing outside in the evening, gardening, or simply enjoying fresh air. One thing I’ve been learning more about on my natural living journey is how certain essential oils have traditionally been used to help discourage bugs naturally.

While no natural option is perfect, many people enjoy using essential oils as part of their outdoor wellness routines because they smell fresh, are easy to customize, and can be added to sprays, lotions, diffuser blends, and DIY products.

Here are some popular essential oils that are commonly used in natural bug-support blends:

Citronella

One of the most well-known oils for outdoor use, citronella is often used to help discourage mosquitoes and is commonly found in candles, sprays, and outdoor products.

Lavender

Lavender is loved for its calming scent, but it’s also often included in outdoor blends to help with mosquitoes and flies. It’s one of my favorite oils because it smells fresh and relaxing at the same time.

Peppermint

Peppermint has a strong minty aroma that many people use around the home and outdoors to help discourage gnats, ants, and spiders.

Cedarwood

Cedarwood has an earthy scent and is frequently used in natural outdoor blends that focus on ticks and other insects.

Geranium

Geranium adds a floral note to bug-support blends and is commonly used in recipes aimed at mosquitoes and ticks.

Lemongrass

Lemongrass has a bright citrus scent that works beautifully in summer diffuser blends and outdoor sprays. It’s often included in blends designed for mosquitoes and other biting insects.

Eucalyptus

Fresh and clean-smelling, eucalyptus is another popular oil used in outdoor wellness products and sprays.

Tea Tree

Tea tree oil is widely used in natural home and body care products and is often added to blends for general insect support.

Rosemary & Thyme

These herbal oils (Rosemary and Thyme) are commonly included in outdoor blends and are often associated with tick-focused recipes.

Ways to Use These Oils

There are so many simple ways to incorporate essential oils into your outdoor routine:

  • DIY bug sprays
  • Lotion bars
  • Outdoor diffuser blends
  • Camping sprays
  • Patio candles
  • Linen or clothing sprays

I personally love creating simple DIY products that feel useful while also smelling fresh and natural.

A Few Important Notes

Essential oils are highly concentrated and should always be used carefully. Be sure to:

  • Dilute properly before applying to skin
  • Avoid contact with eyes
  • Use caution around pets and children
  • Patch test before use
  • Research oils carefully before using outdoors or around animals

Natural living is a learning journey, and I enjoy discovering simple ways to support wellness while spending time outside. I love that essential oils can help create a more peaceful, fresh outdoor experience while adding beautiful scents to everyday life.
